Here at The Radon Consultants we’re proud to announce that we’re taking part in Radon Awareness Week, November 3rd - 9th 2025. Throughout this special week we’ll be sharing valuable information alerting all to the importance of understanding radon, its risks and how to protect ourselves from its effects.
Have you ever noticed the distinct smell of gas in or around your home? Instantly you’re sniffing to make sure your nose is telling the truth, you’re trying to locate the source, and you’re asking others if they can smell it too. Why? Because you understand the danger of a gas leak. If you suspect one, you call the experts in…ASAP.
Did you know there is a different gas that could be accumulating in your home, potentially affecting your health and the health of your loved ones? This particular gas, although dangerous, cannot be detected through smell. This gas is odourless, colourless and tasteless. Would it not be wise to learn how to detect this gas and, if necessary, do something to reduce the risk? Yes, absolutely!
This gas is radon.
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. It remains at a safe level outdoors but can reach harmful levels indoors. Every year in the UK more than 1,100 lung cancer deaths are caused by radon, and many more families affected. So, although silent, radon is undeniably deadly.
Despite the serious threat to health, radon is not widely known or understood by the general population. In 2024 GoCompare conducted a YouGov survey of UK residents. It found that nine out of ten (90%) UK adults have never checked the radon levels in their homes. And only one-fifth (19%) are aware of the risks of radon exposure in the home. Are you aware?
This is why Radon Awareness Week is so important and why we’re so proud to have a share. So, what’s this week all about? The aim is to inform as many people as possible about radon. All homes, schools and workplaces in radon risk areas should have their levels checked. It’s easy to do and we’ll assist you every step of the way - just get in touch.
Radon Awareness Week is the perfect opportunity to send a powerful call to action to the UK Government. On behalf of the 1,100 people in the UK who lose their lives each year to lung cancer caused by radon exposure, the UK Radon Association has written to the Secretary of State for Health and Social Care. We, The Radon Consultants, along with all members of the UK Radon Association, feel passionately that lives could be saved if the UK Government does more to raise awareness of radon risk and means of protection. The Government must take action to inform and protect the nation.
The letter makes three proposals to the Government:
We're sure you'll agree it's vital everyone knows about radon. We all must understand how to check if we're at risk and take action if we are. Find out if you live or work in a radon risk area using this map.
As we eagerly begin this exciting week of activity - keep your eyes peeled for more posts and information from us, The Radon Consultants. If you have any questions or would like to discuss how we can help you check the radon levels in your home or workplace, speak to one of our friendly experts.
